The words “dishwasher-safe” sound reassuring. They can also encourage a little too much confidence.
If cookware is labelled dishwasher-safe, it should generally tolerate dishwasher cleaning according to the manufacturer's instructions. That does not automatically mean frequent dishwasher cycles are the gentlest way to care for it.
Dishwasher detergents can be fairly aggressive, while high temperatures and repeated washing may dull certain finishes or gradually affect some coatings. Handles, rivets and exposed metal edges can also age differently from the main cooking surface.
