The hem may curl, the body may twist, and ironing somehow makes the problem look even more obvious. This distortion is often called seam twisting or garment spirality. It can happen with inexpensive everyday tees, premium cotton styles and even clothes that initially feel exceptionally well made. The trouble usually starts long before the shirt enters the laundry basket. Knitted fabric has its own internal tensions. Yarn can twist, fabric can shrink unevenly, cutting can go off-grain and stitching can pull one side harder than another. A T-shirt begins with fabric, and fabric has a natural direction called its grain. When manufacturers cut garment panels without following that grain accurately, the shirt may look perfectly normal before washing. Once water and movement relax the fibres, however, the fabric starts returning towards its natural alignment.
That is when the side seam begins its slow migration.
Imagine drawing straight lines on a slightly stretched rubber sheet. Release the tension and those lines shift. Knitted cotton can behave in a similar way. If the front and back panels sit at slightly different angles to the fabric grain, each panel may shrink or rotate in its own direction.
This problem often appears after the first few washes rather than immediately. One side seam may move noticeably towards the front while the opposite seam travels backwards.
Unfortunately, laundry habits cannot completely repair badly cut fabric. Careful washing may reduce further distortion, but the construction flaw remains.
A useful clue appears when several T-shirts from the same batch or brand develop similar twisting. In that case, the washing machine may deserve an apology. The cutting table was probably the real culprit.

Cotton yarn is created by twisting fibres together. That twist gives yarn strength, but too much of it can also create stored tension.
When knitted into jersey fabric, strongly twisted yarn may try to rotate back towards its relaxed position. Washing gives the fibres moisture, warmth and movement, all of which help release that tension. The fabric then begins to spiral slightly.
This behaviour can pull the entire T-shirt body around its centre.
Single-jersey cotton is particularly prone to this problem because of the structure of the knit. Look closely at many basic tees and the fabric resembles tiny rows of loops. Those loops naturally create some rotational force. Well-controlled yarn and careful finishing keep it manageable. Poorly balanced yarn makes it much more noticeable.
The result can feel mysterious because nothing appears torn, stretched or damaged. The shirt simply refuses to hang straight.
High-quality fabric producers often use balanced yarns and finishing processes to reduce spirality before garments reach stores. Cheaper production may skip some of that control.
So when a ₹399 T-shirt starts turning sideways after three washes, the problem may be hidden inside the yarn rather than inside the washing machine.
Most natural fibres shrink when washed, especially cotton. Manufacturers know this, which is why better-quality fabrics often go through pre-shrinking or compacting before becoming finished garments.
When that step is rushed or skipped, the first few washes complete the shrinking process at home.
The trouble begins when the fabric does not shrink evenly in every direction. The length may reduce more than the width, or one section may contract slightly more than another. Side seams then lose their original alignment.
A new T-shirt can therefore fit beautifully on Sunday and look strangely shorter and twisted by Wednesday.
Check the overall dimensions after washing. Has the shirt become noticeably shorter? Does the width feel tighter? Has the hem started pulling diagonally? These signs often point towards uncontrolled shrinkage.
Cold or lukewarm water can reduce the severity, although it cannot undo shrinkage that has already happened.

Sometimes the fabric is perfectly respectable and the stitching creates the trouble.
A T-shirt usually joins its front and back panels along the side seams. During sewing, both fabric layers should move through the machine at the same speed. If one layer stretches while the other remains relaxed, tension becomes trapped inside the seam.
The shirt may still look straight when freshly pressed at the factory. Washing removes that temporary neatness.
Once the fibres relax, the tighter panel begins pulling against the looser one. The seam can rotate, pucker or curve rather than falling vertically from the underarm towards the hem.
Uneven feeding happens more easily with lightweight stretch fabrics because they move and stretch while sewing. Poor machine settings can make matters worse.
Inspect the seam closely. If it looks wavy, gathered or slightly stretched even when the shirt lies flat, construction tension may be involved.
This issue often becomes easier to notice after ironing. Press the shirt flat and one side may stubbornly refuse to align with the other.
Good stitching should almost disappear during wear. When a seam behaves like a determined autorickshaw driver searching for a shortcut, something probably went wrong during construction.
Hot washes can be useful for towels, bedding and heavily soiled items, but everyday cotton T-shirts rarely need such enthusiasm.

That means a slightly unstable shirt may become noticeably twisted after repeated warm or hot washes.

For regular tees, cool or lukewarm washing is usually kinder unless the care label says otherwise.

There is no need to treat every tee like a museum textile, though. A normal gentle wash works perfectly well for most.
The bigger lesson is simple: more heat does not automatically mean more cleanliness. Sometimes it simply gives unstable fabric enough encouragement to reveal its bad habits.
A washing machine does more than soak clothes. It lifts, rotates, tumbles and spins them repeatedly.

The spin cycle deserves particular attention.

Turning T-shirts inside out can reduce surface rubbing as well. It will not fix structural spirality, but it may protect prints, colour and fabric texture.
If several older T-shirts have slowly developed crooked seams, consider the washing cycle before replacing half the wardrobe. Sometimes the machine setting marked “intensive” has been taking its job slightly too seriously.
Drying can change a T-shirt almost as much as washing.
Inside a tumble dryer, wet clothes repeatedly lift, fall and rotate while warm air removes moisture. That combination of heat and movement can encourage shrinkage and distortion, especially when the fabric already contains internal tension.

Not every T-shirt contains a single fibre.
Cotton-polyester, cotton-elastane, viscose blends and other combinations are common because blending fibres can improve softness, durability, stretch or wrinkle resistance. The catch is that different fibres react differently to water and heat.
Cotton may shrink noticeably. Polyester generally shrinks much less under normal washing conditions. Elastane reacts differently again and can lose resilience when repeatedly exposed to high heat.
When these fibres share one piece of fabric, uneven movement can create distortion if the blend has not been properly engineered or finished.
For example, a cotton-rich stretch tee may gradually become shorter while retaining much of its width. The side seams can then curve as the knit adjusts.
Blended fabrics are not automatically inferior. In fact, a well-made blend can hold its shape better than poorly produced pure cotton.
The care label matters more than the marketing phrase printed on the tag.
Check the fibre composition before choosing washing temperatures and drying methods. A shirt containing elastane may benefit from gentler heat than a basic cotton tee.
Think of blended fabric as a group project. Everything works beautifully when the members cooperate. When each fibre starts doing its own thing, the seams may show the disagreement.
Wet T-shirts are surprisingly easy to distort.
Cotton absorbs a significant amount of water, making the garment heavier immediately after washing. Pulling it sharply from a packed washing machine, wringing it by hand or hanging it carelessly can stretch the knit while it is vulnerable.
The damage may not appear dramatic at first.
One side could simply become a little longer than the other. The neckline might widen slightly. A seam may shift because the surrounding fabric has stretched unevenly.

Convenient? Certainly.
Kind to the garment? Not particularly.
Sometimes every laundry habit is reasonable and the T-shirt still twists.
That usually points towards poor dimensional stability in the fabric itself.
Stable fabric should retain its basic shape after normal washing and drying. Manufacturers test this by measuring shrinkage, spirality and other changes before approving material for garment production. When quality control is weak, unstable fabric can reach the cutting floor.
The shirt may look excellent under shop lighting because finishing treatments, pressing and fabric tension keep everything temporarily aligned.
Washing removes that disguise.
After a few cycles, the body twists, the hem becomes uneven and the side seams refuse to stay at the sides. No special detergent or clever ironing technique can fully correct the problem because the structure of the material itself is unstable.
Price alone does not guarantee stability either. A ₹1,499 fashion tee can twist while a ₹499 basic tee stays straight for years. Construction quality matters more than the number printed on the tag.
When buying, look at how the garment hangs naturally. Check whether the side seams already lean slightly and whether the fabric appears skewed.

Still, washing cannot rescue every shirt.

Treat well-made T-shirts kindly and they can hold their shape for years. Choose unstable ones, and the side seams may eventually decide that the sides were merely a suggestion.
