IAF group captain Shubhanshu Shukla Becomes First Indian Headed To ISS.
Today, IAF Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla lifted off from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 12:01 PM IST aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, as part of the historic Axiom-4 mission. Shukla is piloting the mission alongside veteran astronaut and mission commander Peggy Whitson. The launch took place from NASA's iconic Launch Complex 39A- the same pad that sent Neil Armstrong in Apollo 11 to the Moon in 1969.
This mission places Shukla on course to become the first Indian astronaut to reach the International Space Station (ISS), four decades after Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma became the first Indian in space in 1984 aboard the Soviet Soyuz T-11 spacecraft.
Shukla is serving as the pilot of the Axiom-4 mission, under the command of veteran NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson. The crew also includes two other international astronauts, forming a four-member team that is expected to dock with the ISS on June 26, 2025 at approximately 4:30 PM IST.
The Axiom-4 mission is a privately funded commercial spaceflight organised by Axiom Space in collaboration with NASA and SpaceX. Over the course of their two-week stay aboard the ISS, the crew will conduct 60 scientific experiments, including seven proposed by Indian researchers.
IAF Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla will also participate in a space-to-Earth outreach programme, including a live interaction with a VIP guest- a moment expected to inspire millions of young Indians.
As India celebrates this milestone in space exploration, it's also a timely opportunity to bring space science closer to home- especially for children enjoying the summer vacation. While recreational visits to space centres may be out of reach for many, a hands-on experience in rocketry is now possible with the Smartivity Rocket Launcher Kit for Kids.
Crafted by IIT Delhi alumni, this DIY kit is designed to make science fun and accessible. Here's what makes it stand out:
Shubhanshu Shukla is an Indian Air Force Group Captain serving as the pilot on the Axiom-4 mission to the International Space Station.
Axiom Mission 4 (Ax‑4) is a private spaceflight to the International Space Station (ISS) operated by Axiom Space in partnership with SpaceX and NASA. It marks the first time an Indian astronaut is travelling to the ISS, advancing India's space diplomacy and research.
The crew is expected to dock with the ISS on June 26 at approximately 4:30 PM IST.
The crew will perform 60 experiments, including seven proposed by Indian researchers, covering microgravity biology, materials science, and space medicine.
The Smartivity Rocket Launcher Kit offers a hands-on, screen-free way for kids to explore rocketry and STEM concepts, inspired by real space missions like Axiom-4.
As IAF Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla charts a path among the stars, this moment serves as a reminder that the journey into space begins with curiosity, and sometimes, with a rocket built at home.
