Modern smartphones display more battery information than older devices ever did, but extra data does not always mean extra clarity. Battery health estimates can change, phones may temporarily heat up after updates, and charging speeds vary depending on temperature and usage. Add social-media “battery hacks” into the mix and even sensible advice starts sounding suspicious.

Lithium-ion batteries also wear down naturally. They are consumable components, rather like tyres on a scooter. Good habits can slow that ageing, but no setting can freeze a battery in perfect condition forever.
So, does a software update really damage battery health? And should a phone always be charged to 100 per cent? These 10 popular myths deserve a closer look.
This is one of the most convincing battery myths because the timing can look suspicious. Install a large software update on Monday, notice weaker battery life on Tuesday, and the connection seems obvious.
Usually, however, the update itself has not suddenly damaged the battery.
After a major update, a smartphone may perform several demanding jobs in the background. It can re-index photos, optimise apps, rebuild search data, synchronise cloud files and complete system housekeeping. These processes use the processor and may make the phone warmer than usual. Battery drain can therefore increase temporarily.
There is another wrinkle. Battery-health software sometimes recalibrates its estimate after an update. If the displayed maximum capacity falls from 97 per cent to 95 per cent, the battery may not have lost two percentage points overnight. The software could simply be reporting its condition more accurately.
A poorly optimised update can occasionally cause genuine battery-drain problems, but that is different from instantly damaging battery chemistry. Give the phone a little time after a major update before declaring the battery doomed.
The old warning sounds dramatic: leave the phone plugged in overnight and the battery will slowly cook itself to death.
Modern smartphones are considerably smarter than that.
Once the battery reaches its charging limit, the phone's power-management system controls how much energy enters the battery. The more useful habit is controlling heat. Keep the phone uncovered, use a reliable charger and enable optimised charging when available. There is no need to set a 2 a.m. alarm just to unplug it.
This advice belongs to an earlier era of rechargeable batteries, yet it refuses to disappear.
Modern smartphones use lithium-ion batteries, and they do not need regular journeys from 100 per cent all the way down to zero. In fact, frequently allowing the battery to become completely empty can place more stress on it than topping it up earlier.

Battery care should make a smartphone easier to live with, not turn charging into a mathematics examination. Use 100 per cent when the extra endurance helps. On quieter days, a lower charging limit may offer a small long-term benefit without creating inconvenience.
Fast charging often gets blamed because it produces the most noticeable side effect of charging: heat.
Plug a compatible phone into a powerful charger and the battery percentage can climb surprisingly quickly. The device may also feel warmer, which makes the process look harsh.
Yet fast charging is not simply uncontrolled electricity rushing into the battery.
Modern charging systems regulate voltage, current and temperature throughout the session. Charging usually happens fastest when the battery is relatively low, then slows as it approaches full capacity. The phone may also reduce charging speed automatically when temperatures rise.
Heat remains the real concern. Repeated exposure to excessive temperature can accelerate battery ageing. That is why gaming, recording long videos or running navigation while fast charging can create less favourable conditions.
Fast charging itself, though, is not automatically a battery killer.
It can be genuinely useful when 15 minutes beside a café socket provides enough power for several more hours. Use a suitable charger, keep the phone ventilated and avoid heavy workloads while it charges.
Convenience and sensible battery care can comfortably coexist.

There is something satisfying about opening the recent-apps screen and swiping everything away. It feels like spring cleaning for the phone.
Unfortunately, repeating that ritual every few minutes may achieve very little.
Modern mobile operating systems manage background apps aggressively. Apps shown in the recent-apps menu are often paused rather than running at full power. Removing them constantly can force the phone to reload those apps from scratch later, using processor time and energy again.
That does not mean background apps never cause problems.
An app with constant location access, excessive notifications, poor optimisation or a software bug can consume unusual amounts of power. Battery settings usually reveal which apps have been especially hungry.
The smarter approach is targeted rather than theatrical.
If a food-delivery app used an unexpectedly large share of the battery despite barely being opened, check its background permissions. If one social app keeps the phone warm, update it or restrict its activity.
Swiping away ten harmless apps after every WhatsApp message mostly gives the thumb extra exercise. Good battery management comes from identifying genuine offenders, not endlessly clearing the recent-apps screen.

Dark mode looks stylish, feels easier on the eyes in dim surroundings and can sometimes save battery power. The important word is “sometimes”.
The benefit depends heavily on the display technology.
On OLED and AMOLED screens, individual pixels produce their own light. A genuinely black pixel can effectively switch off, so darker interfaces may consume less energy. The savings become more noticeable when the display spends plenty of time showing large black areas at higher brightness.
LCD screens work differently. Their backlight usually remains active across the display, even when the screen shows black. Dark mode therefore provides far less battery advantage on such devices.
Even on an OLED phone, switching every app to black will not magically double battery life.
Screen brightness, refresh rate, signal strength, gaming, navigation and video streaming can have a much larger effect. Someone watching reels at maximum brightness for three hours will not rescue the battery merely by turning the settings menu dark.
Use dark mode because it suits your eyes and preferences. Treat any battery saving as a welcome bonus rather than a miracle cure.
Answering a message while the phone is plugged in will not send the battery into early retirement.
Light use during charging is generally fine. Reading messages, checking email or browsing a few webpages does not automatically harm the device.
Problems become more likely when charging and heavy workloads combine.
A graphically demanding game, lengthy video call or navigation session already pushes the processor and display. Add fast charging and the phone may generate considerably more heat. Since high temperatures accelerate lithium-ion battery ageing, repeated hot charging sessions are worth avoiding.

The logo on the charger matters less than its quality, safety standards and compatibility.
A well-made charger from a reputable manufacturer that supports the correct charging protocol can safely power a compatible smartphone. The phone and charger communicate to determine suitable charging conditions, rather than forcing the highest possible wattage into the battery.
The real danger lies with questionable accessories.
A suspicious ₹199 charger bought purely because it promises “super turbo 120W” deserves more caution than a properly certified product from an established brand. Poorly designed chargers may lack reliable thermal management, electrical protection or consistent power delivery.
Cables matter too. A damaged or badly made cable can cause charging issues even when the adapter itself is excellent.
So there is no requirement to cling forever to the exact charger supplied in the box. Choose trustworthy accessories with appropriate specifications. Saving a few hundred rupees on an unknown charger is rarely worthwhile when it powers a device worth tens of thousands.
